The Mid Devon District Council ECO Stars Scheme was launched on the 16 March 2011.
Lord Henley, Parliamentary Under-Secretary for Waste Management and Recycling at Defra, announced his support for the free scheme being run by Mid Devon District Council for commercial operators of vans, trucks, buses and coaches in the Mid Devon area.
Lord Henley said "I'm pleased to support the launch of the ECO Stars scheme in Mid Devon. It builds on the success of the ECO Stars South Yorkshire scheme over the last two years and is a good example of a local authority working together with commercial vehicle operators to help improve efficiency and air quality. ECO Stars is the kind of practical measure which local authorities can introduce as a part of their air quality action plan."
Local operators attended the launch event held on the morning of the 16 March 2011 at the premises of local operator, Gregory Distribution Ltd - the first local member to sign up to the scheme - along with officers and elected Members from Mid Devon District Council. Gregory Distribution Ltd’s Managing Director, Andy Walker said "We're proud to be the first local member of the ECO Stars scheme in Mid Devon. Being part of the ECO Stars scheme and, in particular, being given the top 5-star rating, shows our commitment to continuous operational efficiency and improvement."
Chairman of Mid Devon District Council, Frank Rosamond, said: "Protecting the environment is one of the Council's key priorities; of which improving air quality is an important part. In piloting the ECO Stars scheme, we contribute to this objective and demonstrate our commitment and support to vehicle operators, big or small, who work in Mid Devon. By providing free expert advice, and funding courtesy of Defra, we are able to recognise best practice, despite current economic pressures. I am grateful to those who have signed up as leaders in their field, and look forward to welcoming new members in the future."
