Solar cinema helps schools plan climate change action

On 5 June 2009, approx 100 pupils from secondary schools across Rotherham came together to celebrate World Environment Day in the worlds first ever mobile solar-powered cinema. The event took place in the grounds of Rockingham School in the 45ft cinema marquee.

Paul Hudson from BBC Look North opened the event with a presentation on climate change and how individuals can do their bit for the environment

Activities included an environmental quiz looking at issues from waste and recycling to travel and cows! Working together, pupils came up with ideas for ways to improve their local environment and made pledges to do something as a school, with support from various council services: the Youth Service, Area Assemblies, Healthy Schools and local Elected Members.

The morning was a huge success, resulting in many fantastic ideas to tackle climate change and improve links between young people and Rotherham Council and further work will now take place to ensure these pledges become a reality.

The event was organised as part of Rotherhams Local Democracy Campaign which aims to get young people interested and involved in their local council and community.
