South Yorkshire Schools Climate Change Project
This exciting new project is here to help more schools across South Yorkshire take more action against climate change.

Sharing ideas
Schools have lots of good ideas for ways they can reduce carbon emissions and adapt to a changing climate, both on their own sites and out in the local community. Some schools have lots of experience of taking action against climate change. The project will help schools to share these good ideas with each other along with lessons they have learnt from their own climate change projects.

An annual Schools Climate Change Conference will bring together schools from across South Yorkshire to review their achievements, share their experiences face-to-face, discuss issues and start planning their next climate change projects.
Specialist Advice

There are many local specialists who can provide advice and support to schools and a database is being developed. The project aims to puts schools in touch with the right people to help them. By creating a network of specialists and schools for each of the 8 sustainable schools doorways, the project will improve opportunities to share best practice.
Improving knowledge and understanding
Not everyone knows about climate change and what each of us can do to help tackle climate change. The project is supporting schools to improve knowledge and understanding across the school campus, through the curriculum and in the wider community.
Providing training
A programme of training events for school teachers and community stakeholders is planned. More details will be posted in due course.
Increasing action
By providing a range of support to schools, the project is encouraging increased direct positive action within schools and in the wider community. In addition, by preparing South Yorkshires young people to play an active role in tackling climate change now, they will be well-prepared to tackle future climate change challenges as adult citizens.

The democratic process at both a community and district level is important for agreeing action on many issues including climate change. The project is developing opportunities for schools and young people to learn more about it by, for example, meeting elected members to discuss climate change issues.
We can all do our bit and schools have a big part to play in tackling climate change. Together we can do it!
Supported by
Coordinated by the South Yorkshire Climate Change Network, the project is funded by the Yorkshire and Humber Regional Improvement and Efficiency Partnership (RIEP).
Project Officer
The project will be appointing a Schools Climate Change Officer who will be hosted by Sheffield City Council. Part of the officers role will be to produce a South Yorkshire Schools Climate Change Strategy setting out what we want to achieve in the future.
