South Yorkshire Award for local school
Environmental action by Wellgate Primary School was recognised at the 2009 Care4Air Awards in May with a 'Highly Commended' in the Education Award category. The school has worked hard on a new School Travel Plan and has increased the number of pupils walking to school to well above the national average (62% compared to the national average of 54%). This has helped improve air quality in the area and reduce carbon emissions by reducing the numbers of cars bringing children to school. Installing solar panels on the roof has reduced dependency on energy from fossil fuels and is helping to tackle climate change. A new recycling scheme across the campus is reducing the amount of waste going to landfill or for incineration.
