WINNING FILMS FROM REDUCTION FESTIVAL LOOK AT REDUCING OUR ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT

March 2009

It's time to stop using your car. That's the message from local film-makers at Sheffield's recent Reduction Film Festival. The innovative Reduction Festival's debut year was dedicated to short film and video content, and its organisers called for sponsors to come forward and back the campaign, which aimed to help tackle the complex environmental concerns that people have.

Care4Air was one of the proud sponsors of Yorkshire's first ever eco-friendly film festival. As part of the sponsorship package Care4Air, alongside 14 other organisations across the country including Natural England, supplied an environmental title for a film and was then paired with a local film-making company, who had seven days to interpret the title and produce a piece of film.

All films were judged by the reduction panel and a winner was selected at a special premiere at Sheffield's Showroom cinema. Care4Air chose the theme of 'Why should we care for our air?' for selected film-maker Rachael Field, with a view to gaining people's real perception of why we should care about the quality of the air and how air quality affects us day-to-day.

Rachael's film uses animation to show how vehicle emissions, such as nitrogen dioxide and PM10 particles, cause thousands of deaths every year. The film shows that by using your bicycle or walking you will help yourself and the environment stay healthy.

This message ties in with the new Care4Air campaign 'Stop Rolling, Start Strolling' which will launch in April. The campaign aims to encourage people to walk instead of using the car for short journeys.

Mark Daly, spokesperson for Care4Air, said: “Many local people, businesses and communities show their support for Care4Air so it only seemed right that we showed our support for this local festival. Its environmental theme matches that of Care4Air's and we were interested to see what type of film people came up with.

“Our film is brilliant, it's a modern, fun and off the wall animation but with important underlying messages. Well done to the winners, everyone worked really hard on all the films and thanks to the coordinators for allowing us to be part of the festival.”

The Care4Air film made by Rachael Field is now available to be viewed online for the first time.
