The government is proposing to set up a 60mph speed limit for a 32-mile stretch of the M1 between junction 28 and junction 35a, in a bid to cut pollution. This will be the first time in the UK that this a lower speed limit will be used to reduce air pollution. It will be implemented as part of a smart motorway scheme which will include 24 hour hard shoulder running. The environmental assessments carried out on the proposed smart motorway schemes between junction 28 and junction 35a on the M1 show that there is likely to be an adverse impact on local air quality if the motorway continues to operate at the national speed limit (70mph). This speed limit would be in place between 7am and 7pm for seven days a week and would help manage traffic and reduce congestion and air pollutants locally.

The consultation runs from 6 January 2014 to 3 March 2014 http://www.highways.gov.uk/roads/road-projects/m1-junctions-32-35a/
